The size of pallets is directly related to the storage shelves, products being transported, containers, transport vehicles, unloading platforms, and handling facilities. Therefore, the size of pallets is the basis for considering the size of other logistics equipment. For example, the most common width dimensions for the crossbeam of a pallet rack are 2300mm and 2700mm. The former can hold two 1200mm x 1000mm pallets, while the latter can hold three 1200mm x 800mm pallets. Here, it is worth mentioning that in order to establish an effective pallet sharing system, it is necessary to use pallets of uniform specifications. Standardization of pallets is a prerequisite for consistent pallet operations. When choosing tray size, the following factors should be considered:
1. Consider the specifications and dimensions of transportation vehicles and equipment
The appropriate pallet size should conform to the dimensions of the transportation vehicle, which can fully utilize the space of the transportation vehicle, improve loading rate, and reduce transportation costs, especially considering the internal dimensions of sea freight containers and commercial transport vehicles.
2. Consider the packaging specifications for loading goods on pallets
Select the appropriate pallet according to the packaging specifications of the goods loaded on the pallet, maximize the use of the surface area of the pallet, and control the height of the center of gravity of the loaded goods. The reasonable indicator for carrying goods on pallets is to achieve 80% utilization of the surface area of the pallet, and the height of the center of gravity of the loaded goods should not exceed two-thirds of the width of the pallet.
3. Consider the universality of tray size
International standard pallet specifications should be selected as much as possible to facilitate the exchange and use of pallets.
4. Consider the usage area of tray size
The flow direction of the pallet for loading goods directly affects the selection of pallet size. Usually, goods heading to Europe should be selected from 1210 pallets (1200mm × 1000mm) or 1208 pallets (1200mm × 800mm); Goods bound for Japan and South Korea should be selected on 1111 pallets (1100mm x 1100mm); Goods heading to Oceania should be selected on pallets measuring 1140mm x 1140mm or 1067mm x 1067mm; Goods heading to the United States should be selected on 48 inch by 40 inch pallets, with 1210 pallets commonly used domestically for shipping to the United States.
The 1200mm × 1000mm pallet is widely used globally and also in China.
